Post-Surgical Rehabilitation Services

At Thrive Healthcare, we offer comprehensive post-surgical rehabilitation to support your recovery journey. Our experienced physiotherapists provide personalized care to help you regain strength, mobility, and independence after surgery.

Post-Joint Replacement Surgery

Recovering from joint replacement surgery, such as hip or knee replacement, requires a structured rehabilitation plan. Our physiotherapists focus on:

  • Early Mobilization: Initiating movement within a day post-surgery to enhance circulation and reduce complications.

  • Strengthening Exercises: Targeting muscles around the joint to support the new implant.

  • Range of Motion Activities: Improving flexibility to restore functional movement.

  • Pain Management Techniques: Utilizing modalities like ice therapy and manual therapy to alleviate discomfort.

  • Balance and Gait Training: Training in these areas can help improve confidence in mobility, as well as reduce fall risk.

  • Assistive Device Training: Teaching safe use of walking aids (e.g. walking frame, crutches, walking sticks) which is important for early mobility, as well as reduce maladaptive movement patterns.

  • Education: Providing education on post-joint replacement care, activity pacing, and signs of complications to empower you and your caregiver(s) in self-care.

Total Knee Replacement Physiotherapy

We offer both home-based physiotherapy and  in-clinic sessions to meet your needs. Both home- and clinic-based services work hand-in-hand to provide timely, continuous care—supporting your rehabilitation from the moment you're discharged from the hospital until you're safely and confidently back to doing what you love.

Abdominal Surgery Rehabilitation

Post-abdominal surgery rehabilitation is crucial for restoring core strength and function. Our approach includes:

  • Breathing Exercises: Enhancing diaphragmatic breathing to improve oxygenation and reduce pain.

  • Gentle Core Activation: Gradual re-engagement of abdominal muscles to support daily activities.

  • Scar Tissue Management: Techniques to minimize adhesions and improve tissue mobility.

  • Posture Correction: Addressing posture issues that may arise due to surgery.

  • Pain management: Exploring suitable strategies to help reduce post-operative pain that might limit your ability to move around comfortably.

  • Progressive Functional Training: Gradually reintroducing functional movements to help transition safely back to daily activities.

  • Education: Educating on activity modification, wound care, and signs of complications to empower you and your caregiver(s) during the recovery phase.

Our physiotherapists tailor programs to your specific surgical procedure and recovery goals.

Post-Trauma Rehabilitation

Recovering from traumatic injuries requires a multidisciplinary approach. Our trauma rehabilitation services focus on:

  • Pain Management: Through various exercises, or utilizing modalities like TENS to manage pain.

  • Swelling and Edema Management: Applying techniques like compression, elevation, and effleurage to reduce post-injury swelling.

  • Mobility and Restoration of Movement: After trauma, regaining joint mobility is often just as important as strength, especially if immobilization (casts, braces) was involved.

  • Strengthening Exercises: Rebuilding muscle strength to support injured areas

  • Neuro-muscular Training: Trauma can disrupt coordination and proprioception (your sense of body position). Through targeted exercises, we help retrain your nervous system to restore smooth, controlled, and balanced movement.

  • Functional Training: Simulating real-life tasks—such as dressing, walking, or lifting—to promote independence in daily activities.

  • Patient Education: Providing guidance on safe movement strategies, pacing, and long-term injury prevention.

We also collaborate with orthopedic specialists to ensure a holistic recovery plan.

Ligament and Cartilage Repair Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation after ligament and cartilage repair surgeries, such as ACL reconstruction or meniscus repair, includes:

  • Pain and Swelling Management: Early-stage rehab often involves managing inflammation and pain using techniques like cryotherapy, compression, or manual therapy.

  • Range of Motion Recovery: Especially post-ACL or meniscus repair, restoring joint flexibility is a key early goal before progressing to strength work.

  • Early Mobilization and Gait Re-Training: Initiating movement to prevent stiffness and promote healing. Re-learning proper walking mechanics is essential to avoid developing compensatory movement patterns that may result in secondary issues like back pain.

  • Strengthening Programs: Focusing on the affected limb to restore function. Gradual reloading of the repaired tissue helps prevent overuse injuries or re-injury during return to activity.

  • Proprioception Training: Improving joint position sense to prevent re-injury.

  • Sport-Specific Drills: Introducing agility, plyometrics, and dynamic movements to prepare for a safe return to athletic activities. These exercises will be specific to the sport that you do, to ensure adequate build-up to the sport-specific movements in your game.

  • Patient Education: Having a good understanding of gradual loading, symptom monitoring and management, activity pacing, and future injury prevention is key to successful rehabilitation after surgery.

Our physiotherapists design individualized programs to meet your rehabilitation milestones.

When Should Rehabilitation Start?

Rehabilitation begins as early as medically appropriate—often within 24 to 48 hours after surgery or trauma, depending on your condition and your surgeon's recommendations. Early rehabilitation plays a vital role in:

  • Preventing complications such as blood clots, stiffness, or muscle wasting

  • Managing pain and swelling effectively

  • Promoting circulation and tissue healing

  • Laying the foundation for strength, mobility, and safe movement patterns

Whether you're recovering from joint replacement, abdominal surgery, trauma, or ligament/cartilage repair, our team works closely with you and your medical team to initiate timely rehabilitation tailored to your unique recovery timeline. If you’re unsure whether home or clinic-based rehabilitation is more suitable for you, drop us a message to find out more!
