Wellness in Motion: Stories of Strength and Community from the Legends

As a physiotherapist, I've always held the belief that movement and fitness are for everyone — regardless of age, ability, gender, or background. This conviction has shaped how I show up for my patients, how I build programs, and how I envision wellness and health. But it wasn't just a philosophy I carried into practice — it became something I witnessed, experienced, and grew from, especially while working alongside a very special community: Legends.

The Legends community is a functional fitness class designed for older adults — and it has been one of the most humbling, inspiring, and joy-filled parts of my wellness journey. Through it, I've learned not only about movement, but about resilience, identity, growth, and connection. These are the wellness lessons that have transformed not just my practice, but my understanding of what true health means.

Wellness at Any Age: It's Never Too Late to Start

We say this often — almost like a motivational slogan — but witnessing it unfold, session after session, is something else entirely. Many participants joined the class with little to no experience in structured exercise. Some arrived unsure of what they had signed up for, gently (or unwillingly) nudged in by their children or loved ones. But week after week, with consistency and encouragement, they began to progress on their wellness journey.

What's beautiful is watching someone go from "I've never exercised in my life" to lifting, squatting, balancing — moving with purpose and joy. I've heard many say, "When I was younger, there was no time to exercise — I just worked and raised the kids." But that's the thing: it's truly never too late to prioritize your wellness. According to research published in PMC's Neuroplasticity Studies, older adults who engage in regular physical activity show greater gray matter volume in the prefrontal cortex and increased production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which supports cognitive health. The human body, no matter the age, is remarkably adaptive when given the right conditions — patience, persistence, and support — key pillars of successful wellness programs.

Brain Wellness: Learning New Things is for Everyone

There's a saying that "you can't teach an old dog new tricks", and I feel strongly against that outdated notion. Not only does this phrase undermine the potential of older adults, it also disregards how adaptable the brain really is when we prioritize cognitive wellness. Neuroplasticity is real. While learning may look different at different life stages, it is always possible. Research from Brown University demonstrates that older people learn visual tasks just as well as younger ones, though they exhibit plasticity in different parts of the brain. This is the essence of brain wellness — adaptation and growth at every age.

This experience challenged me to become a better teacher and wellness facilitator — to break things down, rethink my cues, and adapt my language. I've had to learn to teach the same movement in multiple ways depending on whether the person speaks English, Mandarin, Malay, or dialect — and that has opened my eyes to the many ways we can communicate wellness beyond words. According to Frontiers in Psychology, cognitive differences across the lifespan often reflect better awareness of details and accumulated learning, not cognitive decline — a powerful reminder that wellness includes honoring the wisdom that comes with age.

Mental Wellness Through Movement: Confidence is Empowering

ree

Improving movement doesn't just change your body — it changes how you feel about yourself, which is fundamental to mental wellness. I've seen Legends walk in shy or unsure, and over time, stand taller, speak louder, and smile more often. As they get stronger, more balanced, and more mobile, their confidence radiates far beyond the walls of the gym. It gives them the confidence to try things that they’ve never done before, like signing up for the in-house games under the Legends categories with their classmates. This transformation is a testament to how physical wellness directly enhances mental and emotional wellness.

This newfound empowerment shows up in the goals they achieve outside of class — whether it's playing badminton with their grandkids, going for a hike, or simply handling chores independently. These moments are reminders that functional fitness isn't just about squats or steps — it's about freedom and holistic wellness. The confidence gained through regular exercise contributes to overall life satisfaction and improved mental health outcomes, creating a positive cycle of wellness.

Social Wellness: Community is Everything

ree

As we age, our social circles often shrink — due to retirement, mobility limitations, or the loss of loved ones. This has emotional, mental, and even physical implications that significantly impact overall wellness. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), social isolation and loneliness affect about a quarter of older people and are key risk factors for mental health conditions in later life. The National Institute on Aging reports that social isolation is linked to higher risks for high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, weakened immune system, anxiety, depression, cognitive decline, and even death.

But in the Legends class, I've seen new friendships bloom, laughter fill the space, and an energy that lifts everyone. Research from the National Academies of Sciences shows that approximately 24% of community-dwelling adults aged 65 and older in the United States (about 7.7 million people) are socially isolated. Creating spaces that combat this isolation is crucial for comprehensive wellness.

It's not just a class — it's a community that promotes social wellness. A space where people show up for themselves and each other. This has reminded me of how vital it is to stay connected and how powerful shared experiences can be in building a sense of belonging. According to the CDC, about 1 in 3 adults in the U.S. report feeling lonely, making community-based wellness programs more important than ever.

Holistic Wellness: The Complete Picture

Working with the Legends community has affirmed what I've always believed — that fitness is for everyone and wellness is multidimensional. But more than that, it's taught me new ways to see, listen, and grow. True wellness encompasses:

  • Physical wellness through movement and strength training

  • Mental wellness through confidence building and cognitive engagement

  • Social wellness through community connection and belonging

  • Emotional wellness through support and encouragement

  • Cognitive wellness through continuous learning and adaptation

According to Michigan Medicine, 1 in 3 older adults still experience loneliness and isolation, with rates doubling among those with poor physical or mental health. This data reinforces why comprehensive wellness programs that address multiple dimensions of health are essential.

Research from Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience confirms that practice-based learning and motor training can optimize brain plasticity in older adults, showing that wellness interventions have measurable neurological benefits. It's a privilege to be on this wellness journey, and I carry these lessons with me — as a physiotherapist, and as a person committed to holistic health.
